The Benefits of Pilates: Building Awareness, Skills, and Strength
Pilates was not designed as a one-size-fits-all sequence of exercises. The exercises are a tool, and they should always have a purpose. An exercise is only valuable when it addresses the needs, goals, and abilities of the person performing it.
Joseph Pilates developed his method as a movement system based on principles that can be adapted to different bodies, needs, and goals. The aim is not simply to complete exercises, but to develop a better understanding of your body, improve your movement skills, and build the physical capacity needed for your individual goals.
Developing Body Awareness
The foundation of effective movement is feeling what you are doing.
Many movement difficulties are not due to a lack of strength. Sometimes the challenge is that a person does not have enough awareness of their body position, how they are moving, or how much effort they are using.
Through focused practice, visual feedback, hands-on guidance, equipment, and exploration, your Pilates teacher can help you develop a clearer sense of:
- where your body is in space
- how different parts of your body work together
- how movement feels when performed
This connection between your nervous system and your body is the foundation of learning. We learn through feedback, awareness, and experience. Without the ability to recognise what is happening, meaningful change becomes much harder.
You cannot change what you cannot feel.
Developing Movement Skills
Developing body awareness provides the foundation for improving your movement skills.
Pilates provides an environment where you can practise movement skills with attention and feedback. You learn how to organise your body, coordinate different areas, and develop more effective movement strategies.
The goal is not only to perform an exercise well during a session. The goal is to develop an understanding of movement that you can recognise and apply in different situations.
Effective movement comes before efficient movement. First, we learn how to achieve a task successfully. Then, we refine how we achieve it by reducing unnecessary effort and improving coordination.
Building Physical Capacity
Awareness and movement skills create the foundation for developing physical capacity. Before increasing load or intensity, it is important to develop the control and understanding needed to perform movements effectively.
As your technique, coordination, and confidence improve, exercises can be progressed through increased resistance or intensity to develop physical abilities such as strength, or endurance.
Appropriate progression allows your body to gradually adapt to greater demands while maintaining movement quality.
Physical capacity develops by gradually exposing the body to greater demands. As your technique, coordination, and confidence improve, exercises can be progressed through increased resistance or intensity to develop physical abilities such as strength and endurance. Appropriate progression allows your body to adapt to new challenges while maintaining movement quality.
A personalised Pilates session combines these three elements: developing awareness, refining movement skills, and building physical capacity.
Developing Movement Control and Efficiency
Control is not about creating stiffness or holding the body still. It is the ability to adjust between stability and mobility depending on the demands of the movement or the task at hand.
Efficient movement means that the right parts of the body move at the right time, with the appropriate amount of effort, while other areas provide the stability needed to support the task. This allows movement to be performed with less unnecessary effort and better coordination.
